Codex of Mechanical Dreams

CAST OF CHARACTERS

Student Inmates

Harun

A boy in my class who’s always scribbling in his notebook. His room is across the courtyard from mine. Even though he claims that friendship is dangerous here, his awkward mannerisms make me want to get to know him better.

Hikari

A girl in my class who doesn’t seem to like me or the trouble I bring.

Isaiah

A boy in my class who’s a bit of a teacher’s pet, but doesn’t stand out much otherwise.

Mehreen

A young girl with a sharp eye and a keen mind.

Michaela

An inmate around my age who seems ill, though no one will confirm it to me. The wardens watch her as though waiting for her time to be up.

Neha

A quiet girl in my class who has some skill in mythomechanics.

Perrine

The prefect for the Seventh Hall, where I live. She’s beautiful, composed, well-liked, and often snide with me. I’m sure there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Phoebe

A younger girl who lives on the Seventh Hall with me.

Samuel

A boy Tinashe’s age who believes mythomechanists do devils’ work. Needless to say, he doesn’t really like me.

Serena Gavia Aeliana

That’s my full name, though the wardens don’t want me to use it anymore. “Gavia” is from my mother, Claudia Gavia Juliana, and “Aeliana” is from my father, Marcus Flavius Aelianus.

Talia

A girl Tinashe’s age. Perrine often scolds her for being too loud for the Emendatorium.

Tenzin

A boy in Quanah’s class who has some skill in mythomechanics and a penchant for aggressive flirting.

Thaddeus

A prefect without much zest for the job.

Tinashe

One of the youngest inmates at the Emendatorium, around fourteen by the looks of it. She’s very friendly and eager to speak to me. She must be lonely.

Vaska

A student in Perrine’s class who has some skill in mythomechanics.

Quanah’s Crew

Bako

A member of Quanah’s crew.

Cleon

One of Quanah’s friends. He seems to want people to think he’s tough, but he seems lonely and anxious.

Dariya

One of the newest inmates at the Emendatorium, after me. Either she likes fighting or she can’t avoid it.

Erling

One of my classmates and a member of Quanah’s crew. He’s tall, lanky, and doesn’t seem to care much about our classes.

Ikemba

A sturdy, older boy with a chemical burn scar across the side of his neck and an irreverent attitude. One of Quanah’s friends.

Kyong

One of Quanah’s crew. He sticks close to Dariya and is studying medicine in vocational training.

Quanah

One of the oldest inmates at the Emendatorium, probably just south of twenty. Perrine claims I should stay away from him because he’s trouble. If defying the dress code is anything to go by, she might be right.

Sandra

An inmate who died trying to escape the Emendatorium with Quanah.

Tam

A girl on Quanah’s crew with a knotted scar across her jaw.

Wardens

Warden Bouras

A warden I’ve never met before, though I heard Warden Sidorova speaking to him. He obviously does something important in the Emendatorium, but I don’t know what.

Warden Daikos

A young, serious warden who teaches the older students.

Warden Gallus

He teaches History of the Federation and enjoys it too much. He either believes he can use logic to convince everyone of his ideals or he knows he can get rid of them if they’re not convinced. I’m pretty sure he has it in for me.

Warden Gomez

She conducts room inspections for the hall where Harun lives and teaches Classic Literature.

Warden Gonzalez

One of the younger wardens, he teaches some of the younger inmates and apparently has some skill with basic mythomechanics.

Warden Hyde

A coarse, unpleasant warden who seems to enjoy making inmates suffer. He doesn’t trust outsiders and appears pretty comfortable in his current position.

Warden Magna

One of the oldest wardens at the Emendatorium, she teaches Mythomechanics and doesn’t appreciate students speaking out of turn, as I unfortunately discovered.

Warden Sidorova

A steely woman who’s too important to teach classes to inmates, she’s taken an interest in my mental wellbeing—though not out of any concern for me. She suspects me, though I’m not sure of what.

Warden Taylor

One of the youngest wardens, she conducts room inspections in the Seventh Hall, where I live, and teaches Teachings of the Oracles, which is almost as pointless as Mythomechanics under Warden Magna. She has an enthusiasm for her position that I don’t believe it deserves.

Others or Unknown

Angel

A voice I heard in the night. She claims to know me, but I don’t recognize her. How does she know about my Codex? And what does she want from me?

Chanthira

One of the Condemned, criminals serving a life sentence at the Emendatorium by doing menial labor. She works in the kitchen and always has a smile and a mug of coffee for Perrine.

Claudia Gavia Juliana

My mother. When we lived in Perseus, she was a mythomechanist and mythomechanical engineer.

Ezequiel

One of the Condemned who seems excessively suspicious of me.

Julia Gavia Aeliana

My older sister, who disappeared from Perseus a few months before the bombs fell.

Marcus Flavius Aelianus

My father. When we lived in Perseus, he was a mythomechanist and expert at mythomechanical repairs and modifications.

Brigadier General Mathesius

A mysterious officer of the Federation I’ve overheard speaking to Warden Sidorova. Could he be the same brigadier general who ordered for me to be escorted to the Emendatorium by more than the usual number of guards?
